Kanye West feat. Paul McCartney - Only One

In case you missed it, Kanye quietly dropped a track from his upcoming so-far-untitled album in the early hours of the new year. Continuing the minimalism of Yeezus, it trades in that album’s anger for a soft sentimentality last seen on “Hey Mama” a decade ago, and features an improvised keyboard accompaniment by Paul McCartney, rumored to be the first in a series of collaborations between the two.

On the track, Kanye (whose name translates literally to “only one”) channels the voice of his late mother Donda, addressing his daughter Nori, the granddaughter she never met. It’s a moving piece of work from an artist known recently more for brash hostility than pathos, and it reaches an incredible synthesis between the artificial auto-tuned vocals and the rawness of what they’re saying.

"Only One" represents another left turn from an artist who has made a career out of them, and injects emotional stakes into the fine line between public and private life that is of intense interest for West.
